How to erase an MDADM device

If you want to permanently destroy /dev/md0, then here’s how to do it:
sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md0
sudo mdadm --remove /dev/md0

Then the last step is important. For each device in the RAID, do:

sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sd[nameOfDevice]

That’s it.
